I just returned from an evening of dancing to live music. Live, danceable music always brings great joy to me. I love moving my body in harmony with the music, I love experiencing all the ways my body will move, I love watching others experience the same things. This evening it was reggae. Rock and roll, jazz, blues, yes even classical can inspire the same joy. When I am in a self-care mindset, I plan dance into my life.
Cool, clear water
We can live without petroleum, but we can’t live, literally, without water. Water is becoming a politically charged issue. In a complex water deal in the Columbia River gorge, Oregon might swap half the spring water supplying a fish hatchery to the town of Cascade Locks in exchange for city well water. Then the city could sell the spring water to Nestle to bottle.
Dig those well-rounded points
Here’s a cool clip from a 1971 animated film based on a musical fable by Harry Nilsson. The central character in the story — a sweet boy name Oblio — is cast out of his village because he is different. All of the other villagers have pointed heads, but Oblio’s noggin is round. His attempts to hide this fact by wearing a pointed hat don’t change his social circumstances.
What’s it all About?
Every day the first thought of the productive person is…. what do I need to accomplish? Work, laundry, grass mowing (ach), finances, really never ending. What a funny life we have decided is normal. I look at the young people and think that I am now old enough to be their grandparent, and yet I still feel like I am the hippie kid who spent her last 200 bucks on a property down payment back in 1977 with the hippie Buddhist guy with the long hair and beard with whom I lived in the tent where we conceived our first child.
5 REASONS CHRONIC ILLNESS IS FABULOUS
1. Weight loss
Sure, at first you gain weight, laying around on your ass, eating bon bons and watching reruns of Charmed and Gossip Girl. Not to mention the midnight sugar bowl runs brought on by the anxiety medicine cravings. BUT, given enough time, you will lose your job. This means you will no longer be able to afford food.
A Woman and Her Beard
Last year, an Italian woman on Real Housewives of New Jersey admitted to dry shaving the hairs on her chin and lip. Of course, this is second hand information since I would NEVER watch that train wreck of a reality tv show. Never. Anyway Caroline Manzo was bashed hardily by viewers, commentators, and even her supposed reality peeps.
Coming to a neighborhood near you…
The good people of CRAW [Clatsop Residents Against Walmart] are asking that as many people as possible voice their opposition to the permit application to fill the wetlands on the North Coast Business Park property that would pave the way for a Walmart in our area. That application is currently up for public comment until 5 PM today, Sunday – Mother’s Day, May 13. The application and comment form are available on DSL’s website (http://www.statelandsonline.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Comments.AppDetailLF&id=48466).
An Outsider Taking It On
Having never before visited, Cannon Beach didn’t conjure images of any kind for me other than sand and waves, which can be very misleading for someone visiting from sunny Southern California, where the waves are bigger, the sand can burn your feet, and everyone runs around half-naked instead of thrice layered.
The Stag Horn and The Thorn: A simple stream-of-consciousness poem
The stag horn and the thorn.
The blood and the flood.
The rose and the crow.
The taste and space.
The touch and clutch.
The ice and the dice.
The eye and the sky.
The ear and the deer.
